The Best Deep Fried Oreos – NYC Fair Food

Everybody loves fair food, am I right? Corn-dogs (Pogos), funnel cakes, cotton candy and my fav, deep-fried Oreos. I thought that the only place to properly enjoy them would be, where I first discovered them – at the New York Italian Festival, honoring San Gennaro. At his yearly event, you will find kiosk after kiosk of fair delights.

Now you don’t have to go all the way there. We can enjoy them in our own home anytime we want!

They will always steal the show and they are so easy to make! Serve them plain, with powdered sugar or with vanilla ice-cream.

My quest for a deep-fried Oreo recipe dates back a couple of years. On-line, they mostly have recipes containing pancake batter mix. This is a short-cut and a little like cheating to me lol. The “cakey” texture was not quite what I was looking for. I was looking for something lighter, like I had in New York.

I lucked out recently when I received the latest issue of Food Network magazine. I featured a whole section called The Fry Guide illustrating all the foods you can “improve” by frying. Very fair-food inspired.  My arteries were practically clogging at the prospect of frying every imaginable thing I can, including Mac n’ Cheese, Cashew nuts, Ginger, Brie cheese, Bananas, Olives , poached eggs and oh, the list goes on and on! To my delight, the list included deep-fried Oreos, sans pancake mix. Eureka!

When I served my Oreos at the last family event, not only did everybody love them…but somone who shall not be named walked off with my magazine containing my recipe! Anyway, deciding that I couldn’t live without this issue, I went out and bought another one the next day.

Deep Fried Oreos

How to Fry:

Heat 3 inches of vegetable or peanut oil in a  wide, deep pot over medium-high heat. I use the pot that I make my tomato sauce in.

If you have a candy thermometer, the oil will be ready when the temperature reaches anywhere between 350 – 375 degrees. (If not, just add a drop of batter (recipe below) into the oil, if it fries up right away and comes to the top – its ready! After the first one, you’ll get a hang of it 🙂

Yield: Makes about 25 deep-fried Oreos

Basic Batter:

Whisk the following together until combined:

1 cup of flour,

1 tsp of baking powder (magic)

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup of cold club soda or sparkling water

1/2 tsp of cinnamon

1 tbsp of sugar (TIP!  I did not use sugar and they were sweet enough for me. You can skip the sugar especially if you are planning to sprinkle confectionner’s sugar on them)

Oreos

25 regular Oreo cookies (Aprox)

Method:

Coat about 3-4 Oreos in batter, then one by one, take them out with a large spoon, letting the excess drip off and carefully lower it into the hot oil using a large spoon. Do not overcrowd your pot.

Fry, turning as needed until crisp and golden (2-3 minutes)

Place fried cookies in a serving dish lined with paper towels.

Repeat with the rest of your cookies until the batter is all used up.

They are best served immediately.

Sprinkle on some confectioner’s sugar and enjoy!

Alternately or in addition to the sugar, why not drizzle on some chocolate sauce. I’ve also seen these babies served with vanilla ice-cream 🙂

A la prochaine! xox
